Strand Releasing was formed in 1989 in California and soon established a reputation as a home for daring independent and foreign films, as well as documentaries and work by LGBTQ filmmakers.

In its 30 years of life, the distribution company has been behind the release of such films as Tom Kalin's Swoon and Tommy O'Haver's Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss, and more recently Lucrecia Martel's Zama. It's also re-released titles including Mike Nichols' The Graduate and Russ Meyer's Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and it's been a standing supporter of the work of filmmakers such as Bruce LaBruce and Gregg Araki, releasing multiple titles from each. Araki's 1992 road movie/New Queer Cinema essentialThe Living End was one of the films that helped put Strand on the map.

For Strand's 30th anniversary, the Wex will be one of five theaters around the US to present a program of 30 short, smartphone-created films by directors with whom the company has built relationships over the years, including John Waters, Fatih Akin, Andrew Ahn, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and Catherine Breillat.;30/30 Vision: 3 Decades of Strand Releasing will screen Friday, November 22, with Strand cofounder Marcus Hu in attendance. As a bonus, Hu will be joined by Araki for the conversation, and the event will conclude with a screening of The Living End.
