Vijay Iyer Sextet

Black and white photo of musician playing piano

“Iyer is the most celebrated pianist in jazz—he may be the most celebrated musician in jazz right now—and that gives him great creative license…Like the greatest pianists in jazz history—Bud Powell, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans—Iyer could never be mistaken for anyone else.”—JazzTimes

Every time acclaimed jazz pianist Vijay Iyer has come to the Wex, he’s brought a unique band exploring fresh dimensions in his wide-ranging musical interests. Now with this sextet, DownBeat’s artist of the year offers a broad sonic palette that provides new color and tonal complexity to support his exploratory compositions.

And what a band! You’ll hear trumpeter Graham Haynes, whose work with the Steve Coleman–led M-Base Collective inspired Iyer, and Mark Shim on tenor sax alongside Steve Lehman on alto, Stephan Crump on bass, and Justin Brown on drums. Together they’ll preview material from the sextet’s forthcoming album for ECM Records right before they head into the studio to record it a few days later. Get your tickets now, and be among the first to hear Iyer’s latest music when this sextet lights up the best room for jazz in town—a major highlight of our jazz season.
