Wings of Desire

(Der himmel über Berlin, Wim Wenders, 1987)

New Restoration

Still from Wings of Desire

Made not long before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Wings of Desire offers one of cinema’s most beautiful portraits—both of a city and the love and longing it contains. Bruno Ganz stars as Damiel, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the silent fears, hopes, and dreams of all the people living below. But when he falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, is he willing to give up his immortality to be with her? The film remains of the 1980s' best, featuring a mix of luscious black-and-white and color photography, a charming performance by Peter Falk as himself, and searing concert footage of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. (127 mins., 4K DCP)

New 4K restoration with 5.1 sound mix provided by the Wim Wenders Foundation and supervised by Wim and Donata Wenders.

"If ever there was a European art film that could be all things to all people, it’s Wim Wenders’s Wings of Desire."
Michael Atkinson
