Queer Genius

(Chet Pancake, 2019)

Chet Pancake in person

In Queer Genius, filmmaker Chet Pancake examines “queerness” and its impact on artistic creation through an intimate look at the lives and work of five queer female artists.

Through touching portraits of Barbara Hammer, Eileen Myles, Black Quantum Futurism (Rasheedah Phillips and Camae Ayewa), and Dynasty Handbag/Jibz Cameron, Pancake reveals the challenges these radical, multigenerational artists overcame in order to share their creative visions. Queer Genius abounds with Wex connections. Pancake is a past residency artist in our Film/Video Studio, and the film includes footage of the 2019 exhibition Barbara Hammer: In This Body. Phillips and Ayewa recently participated in our Director’s Dialogue on Art and Social Change panel 400Forward, and Eileen Myles visited the Wex in conjunction with the 2007 exhibition Sadie Benning: Suspended Animation and contributed an essay to that catalogue. "The footage is raw, visceral and expansive, covering not only the innovative work of these artists but also…their reflections and vulnerabilities."
