Messidor

(Alain Tanner, 1979)

Two woman sit on mountainside, one holds a gun

Based on a grim true story that gripped France in the 1970s, Messidor follows two young women whose vacation through the Swiss countryside turns into a crime spree. Normally averse to depictions of violence, Tanner uses the story to explore the manner in which the otherwise peaceful landscape is transformed by the actions of his characters. (123 mins., 35mm)
