One of the great antiwar films of the 1960s, Godard’s Les carabiniers follows two peasants lured into joining the army of a fictional country by the king’s promise of riches at war’s end—and the freedom to commit whatever atrocities they please. They recount their misdeeds to their wives via postcards, unaware of the betrayal that awaits at the conclusion of the conflict. (85 mins., 35mm)
