Kummatty

(Govindan Aravindan, 1979)

New Restoration

An elder with white hair smiles and holds a young child in a yellow shirt. A cross sits in front of them as they both sit in a field

Certain to entertain viewers of all ages, Kummatty is a charming tale inspired the folklore of the Malabar region of India.

Kummatty follows a pied piper-like trickster (the Kummatty, or Boogeyman) who visits a small village each year where he entertains the local children with songs and stories, even turning them into animals and back before he moves along to the next village. Director Govindan Aravindan combined elements of documentary observation and moments of fantasy, resulting in a delightful film experience. Produced in the Malayalam language. (90 mins., 4K DCP)
