Grandson leans head on grandmother's shoulder

This soulful debut feature by Ohio natives Erick Stoll and Chase Whiteside is an affectionate, intimate, and beautifully observed look at three twentysomething brothers in Mexico who put their lives on hold to care for América, their charismatic grandmother with advanced dementia. In this rare look at young men as caregivers, the rambunctious brothers clash over their distribution of labor, and difficult questions emerge about what to do for América and how long they each can care for her. But most of the film is, as the Guardian wrote, “a sunny hangout movie” that relishes in the camaraderie and multigenerational connections within this entertaining family. A true delight and discovery! Veteran award-winners of our annual Ohio Shorts program, Stoll and Whiteside received postproduction support for the project from the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Studio Program. Stoll received Ohio Arts Council’s Individual Excellence Award in 2016. The film’s main subject, Diego Alvarez-Serrano, also joins us for the screening! (75 mins., DCP)

"An honest, intimate treatise on kindness. "América" is a film about what it means to have the best years of your life interrupted by the duty of care, and what’s more, to want that to happen."
