Julie Roberts

Welsh-born painter Julie Roberts talks about her work, which is inspired by history, literature, picture books, and memory. Her subject is often the human body, specifically the way the female body historically has been represented in painting.

Presented by Ohio State's Department of Art. Cosponsored by the Wexner Center. Robert's 2004 exhibition Home featured portraits of Sleeping Beauty and victims of Jack the Ripper, as well as August Rodin in his final sleep and the dead Edvard Munch and Jean Cocteau. In this body of work, Roberts achieves a visceral tension through the contrast between her expert handling of pattern and surface and the macabre nature of her subjects.

In this lecture, Roberts talks about her recent work and her use of historical sources and photographic evidence. Roberts lives in Carlisle, England, and is currently a visiting lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art.
