Hear from feminist artist Dana Hoey, whose work focuses on issues of representation of women’s bodies, narrow conceptions of beauty, relationships between women, and the possibility of political art. She aims to combat the limited representation of women in the media by capturing subjects that defy traditional norms, such as pregnant smokers and female boxers. Working primarily in photography and video, Hoey has been exhibiting widely since 1996. Her video installation Fighters is currently featured in the exhibit Artists’ Choice: An Expanded Field of Photography at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

Hoey has presented solo museum exhibits at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington; Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, University of Maryland; and University Art Museum at the University at Albany, New York. She was professor at Columbia University School of the Arts from 2001 to 2007 and is currently a visiting artist at Cooper Union and Bard College in New York. Three books are available on her work: The Phantom Sex, Experiments in Primitive Living, and Profane Waste.
