Tickets Going Fast for Local Debut of Compagnie Tchétché: Dynamic All-Female Dance Ensemble from the Ivory Coast

Tue, Oct 31, 2006

Tickets are going fast for the local debut of Compagnie TchéTché, an all-female dance ensemble from Abidjan, Ivory Coast, bringing its emotionally driven work Dimi to the Wexner Center Performance Space November 9-11.

Founded by talented choreographer Béatrice Kombé to “show that woman is not the weaker gender,” the company dispels the all-too-common image of the subservient woman in African society with a passionate dynamism that balances full-force style and quiet strength. Dimi, translated as Women’s Sorrow, features four dancers and two live musicians performing an original score. While in town, the company will talk with students at Ohio State.

This dance show caps the fall’s stellar dance season at the Wexner Center, following two sold-out shows by Israeli dance group Batsheva and a well-received performance featuring choreographer Akram Khan in October.

TchéTché’s Dimi will be presented in association with the King Arts Complex in the Wexner Center Performance Space Thursday–Friday, November 9–10 at 8 pm and Saturday, November 11 at 2 and 8 pm. Seating in the Performance Space is limited. Tickets are $18 for the general public, $10 for students, and $15 for Wexner Center members & King Arts Complex members and are available now at the Wexner Center (614 292-3535) and Ticketmaster (614 431-3600). $5 High Five tickets are also available for middle and high school students in advance (vouchers should be picked up at the Wexner Center at least a day before the show).

TchéTché was awarded the UNESCO prize at the MASA festival in Côte d’Ivoire for its performance of Dimi as well as other awards at festivals in Madagascar and Germany. The company has performed extensively at international festivals and universities throughout Africa, Europe, and the United States. Wrote the New York Times, “The qualities associated with African dances such as rhythm and energy are channeled here into a geometrically clear style.” Visit www.tchetche.afrikart.net for more information.
