Marimekko’s Vibrant Housewares and Bags Come to Wexner Center Store

Thu, Mar 16, 2006

The high-spirited patterns and smart designs of Finnish textile and design company Marimekko have arrived at the Wexner Center Store—now the only place that carries the Marimekko line in Ohio. Founded in the 1950s, Marimekko has won fans around the world for its brightly colored fabrics, eye-catching patterns, and classic modernist styles. The Store has stocked a variety of Marimekko items for home and office, including fabric, placemats, coin purses, bags, tea towels, trays, mugs, aprons, shower curtains, oven mitts, umbrellas, and more. Many of the items are manufactured at Marimekko's own factory in Finland.

“We are excited to bring these distinctive, vividly colorful designs to the area,” says Chris Conti, Wexner Center Store Manager. “Customers have shared childhood memories of Marimekko sheets, or of decorating their dorm rooms with the stretched fabric. Even for people who don’t have a history with the merchandise, it’s hard to not be attracted to their patterns and quality.”

Founded in 1951 by visionary textile designer Armi Ratia and her husband, Viljo, Marimekko sparked a revolution in the 1950s and ’60s. The company was launched out of a desire to create long-lasting and colorful designs for postwar Finland. The most popular classics in their collections have been in production for as long as 30 years. Visit www.marimekko.us for more information about the company.

The Wexner Center Store is open Monday 10 am-4 pm, Tuesday & Wednesday 10 am-6 pm, Thursday & Friday 10 am-8 pm, Saturday 11 am-8 pm, and Sunday 11 am-6 pm. Order items online at www.wexarts.org/bks.
