"True to bossa nova's essential subtlety."--New York Times

Brazilian singer-songwriter Vinicius Cantuaria is an exemplar of both bossa nova's traditional values and its new directions.

Cantuaria's sublimely understated touch on seductive songs is rooted in the soul of Brazilian music. Yet heÌs also opened new sonic territory with futurist leanings developed in tandem with musician/producer Arto Lindsay, a central figure in New YorkÌs Downtown music scene who was also raised in Brazil. On Cantuaria's new CD, Vinicius, he is complemented by Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, and David Byrne, among other vanguard luminaries.

This concert is planned in conjunction with our fall exhibition featuring the work of influential Brazilian artist Helio Oiticica. Arto Lindsay will participate in the exhibition-related symposium, On Aspects of Tropicalism, at 1:30 pm on Friday, September 21.
