“A funky pulse shifting to a more buoyant groove driven by interlocking guitars.” - Pitchfork

Interest in fusing West African sounds with indie rock is soaring lately with bands like Antibalas, Man Man and Vampire Weekend demonstrating diverse approaches to incorporating the intoxicating rhythms and lilting melodies being rediscovered by this new generation. Extra Golden are one of the most successful exponents of this direction since they are a true collaborative band with two Kenyans from Orchestra Extra Solar Africa and two Americans from the D.C.-based band Golden joining forces for their jubilant sound.

Their most recent release Hera Ma Nono (which translates as "Love in Vain”) for ace indie label Thrill Jockey draws strongly from Kenya’s benga music tradition and even includes a song in tribute to Barack Obama who helped the band obtain their U.S visas so they can knock you out with their dance ready rhythms.
