"An imagination to match his prodigious technical skills."--Los Angeles Times

Dave Holland and Dave Douglas sideman and Downbeat's "Number One Tenor Saxophonist" waiting to be discovered, Chris Potter steps out with his own band and original compositions. Jazz saxophonist Chris Potter initially made his reputation as a first-call sideman for Dave Holland and Dave Douglas among others eager to feature someone with chops to burn in their bands. Many gifted players would be content simply to back such celebrated artists, but now Potter is stretching out as a composer and a leader in his own right.

Gratitude, Potter's first recording for Verve, has earned him widespread kudos as an artist who's arrived, rectifying his spot in the Downbeat Critics' Poll as "Number One Tenor Saxophonist" in the category of "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition." On Gratitude he gives a heartfelt nod to the pantheon of jazz giants who have inspired him (including John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, and Wayne Shorter), while displaying the keen originality and spark he now draws from the young talents who surround him in his own stellar quartet.
