Warhol at the Wex and in the News

June 30: If you're as excited as we are about our upcoming (and only U.S.) presentation of Andy Warhol: Other Voices, Other Rooms, then you'll want to whet your appetite with some of the following news about the show and the man himself.

The July/August issue of Interview Magazine features a comprehensive look at the life and work of this iconic artist. Through archival interviews, photos, and anecdotes from his inner circle, this nearly issue-length primer is a must-read before you hit our galleries. Get a sample at Interview's online home and pick up the issue on newsstands now. To celebrate the release of this issue, members of the Interview editorial board (along with designer Marc Jacobs) stopped by the Charlie Rose Show to discuss Warhol in a lively panel discussion. Check out the entire segment:

. And ArtDaily ran an item on June 28.

On the local front: the editorial board of the Columbus Dispatch wrote that for the Wex "to land an exhibit of this magnitude demonstrates just how highly regarded the institution and its caretakers are within the contemporary-art world." Read the rest at the Dispatch website. The Dispatch announced the show in its March 27 issue with an extensive feature you can still read here. On April 6 the paper followed up with an item in its "Intermission" section about Wexner Center Director Sherri Geldin's meeting with the inimitable pop artist in the 70s. Read that snippet here. The Dispatch wasn't alone: follow or get involved in the discussion at local blog Columbus Underground or read an exclusive feature at the online home of CityScene magazine. Writer and literary critic Lisa Damian also wrote about the show; read it on her blog Damian Daily. More news is no doubt on its way, so keep your eyes on this space for all the Warhol news that's fit to print.

Bill Horrigan and Access to Life Make International Headlines

June 29: Bill Horrigan, the Wexner Center's director of media arts, is the curator of Access to Life, an exhibition that opened at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., on June 14. The show, which documents the impact of free anti-retroviral drugs on the lives of AIDS patients around the world, grows out of a project initiated by The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in partnership with Magnum Photos. Within days of its opening it has earned notices from the Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, ArtDaily the BBC, CNN, and National Public Radio. And locally, the Columbus Dispatch highlighted the show in the June 28 Arts Briefs column. More is on the way, too: watch for upcoming stories on the NBC Nightly News (slated for Monday, June 23) and PBS.

Scorsese on Fresh Air

June 27: The June 27 episode of Fresh Air with Terry Gross features a classic interview with Martin Scorsese from 1997, which includes audio from his visit here to accept the Wexner Prize. You've got a few ways to learn a bit more about this summer's roster: you can download our Mixtape or listen to a podcast or keep reading for a round-up of reviews and interviews (personally, we think all three work).

July 23, Matmos (and Next @ Wex mainstays) Matmos return in support of their all-synth masterpiece Supreme Balloon. For this latest Matador release the duo have chucked the samples and composed a batch of fascinating soundscapes that are not to be missed live. Read Spin's take here and watch for an interview in Columbus's own Outlook Weekly in July.

Keep your eyes for more updates: including links to interviews and reviews for Bon Iver, Extra Golden, and She & Him.

Spring Exhibitions Making News

June 2: Our spring exhibitions are here and they've been making waves in the local and national media.

The Columbus Dispatch reviewed all three exhibitions in the Sunday, June 1 issue. Critic Christopher Yates writes that experiencing all three shows is "like riding a visual arts roller coaster" that results in a "bountiful and stimulating" visit. Click here to read the entire review, and get his thoughts on each exhibition.

Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond, the first museum exhibition of work by this internationally recognized (and Columbus-based) cartoonist, has gotten notice from publications local, national, and international. The Columbus Dispatch featured a major profile of Smith in the May 4 issue. The story, which was the cover of the Arts section, discusses his career and features interviews with Smith, cartoonist and theorist Scott McCloud, and the exhibition's curators Dave Filipi and Lucy Shelton Caswell. Read it here. Columbus Monthly also featured a comprehensive profile by reporter Jory Farr. Read it here. And the This Week chain of local papers featured an interview here.

Two of the nation's leading comics magazine have also covered the show: Wizard magazine's website just posted an extensive interview Smith as well as a behind-the-scenes interview with curators Dave Filipi and Lucy Caswell. Journalista!,The Comics Journal blog, discusses the show here. Publishers Weekly mentions the exhibition in its March 3 best-selling comics list. On the international front, Forbidden Planet, the United Kingdom's largest comic blog network, posted a very complimentary item about the exhibition. There's a lot more out there: ComicRelated, Cartoon Brew, and Everyday is Like Sunday. And be sure to take a look at Comic Related's extended coverage of the opening and McCloud/Smith conversation here. Keep your eyes on In The Media for more updates, including info about an upcoming segment on Smith on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

Also on view is Mary Heilmann: To Be Someone, Heilmann's first touring retrospective. Heilmann scored the remarkable coup of landing on the cover of the November 2007 issues of both Artforum and Art in America. Both of the art mags were noting, and celebrating, the recognition coming to this 67-year-old "painter's painter" as a result of this exhibition. For additional background, check out a profile of Heilmann titled "In Living Color" from Vogue's August 2007 issue and read a review on artnet.com.

Jane Hammond: Fallen, a poignant and thought-provoking exhibition featuring a large field of colorful, handmade leaves, each inscribed with the name of a U.S. soldier killed in Iraq, also opens May 10. The Ohio State University campus newspaper The Lantern published an in-depth and thoughtful interview with Hammond in the May 20 issue. You can read that by clicking here. Fallen is also the subject of an extensive feature in the April issue of Art in America. The ongoing nature of this project is discussed, as is the impact its had on those who have viewed it. You can read the entire story here. And just recently ArtDaily offered a thoughtful write-up of this touring show here.
