Wexner Center to host tribute to Ed Sabol and NFL Films

EDDIE GEORGE & JIM LACHEY TO PARTICIPATE IN PANEL DISCUSSION

Columbus, OH—The Wexner Center is pleased to present three films from the vaults of NFL Films in tribute to former Buckeye and NFL Films founder Ed Sabol on Tuesday, August 2 at 7 pm in the center’s Mershon Auditorium. The screenings will be followed be a panel discussion featuring former Buckeyes and pro standouts Eddie George (Tennessee Titans) and Jim Lachey (Washington Redskins), moderated by the center’s director of film/video David Filipi. Just four days after this event, Sabol will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

Kicking off the Wexner Center program is one of the most influential sports films ever made, They Call It Pro Football (1966). Also screening are Anatomy of a Championship (1964), which documents the Cleveland Browns victory over Baltimore in the 1964 NFL Championship, and NFL ’74: Championship Chase (1974), which features highlights from that season and includes footage of the great Steelers, Raiders, Vikings, and Dolphins teams of the era (program run time: 104 mins.).

A championship swimmer for Ohio State in the mid-1930s, Sabol founded NFL Films in 1962, and the company has grown so exponentially that the sounds and images that the company has accumulated serve as the sport’s history over the past 50 years. “We’re thrilled to pay tribute to a former Buckeye as he is about to be inducted into the Hall of Fame,” says David Filipi, the center’s director of film/video. “Mr. Sabol’s contribution to pro football is immeasurable when one considers how the NFL Films library is interwoven into the history of the sport and our enjoyment of the game. We’ve presented a number of sports-themed film events in the past but never about pro football. It promises to be a memorable night, made even more so by the presence of Eddie George and Jim Lachey.” Special thanks to Colleen Smith-Grubb and Lisa Heckman, of NFL Films, and to Shelly Poe, from Ohio State's Athletic Department.
