WEXNER CENTER FEATURES FOUR SOLO SHOWS THIS FALLTHE NATURAL WORLD A COMMON THREAD IN “ECO-CYCLE”
This fall’s exhibitions in the Wexner Center galleries will feature the work of three artists: painter Alexis Rockman, with an exhibition from the Smithsonian of his vivid and monumental paintings about ecological disaster and other planetary and environmental issues (nearly 40 works in all); the imaginative terrariums of New York-based sculptor and landscape designer Paula Hayes, including new pieces created specifically for this show, among them a rooftop garden that will be a permanent addition to the center; and the many-layered mixed-media collages and sculptures of Los Angeles artist Elliott Hundley, whose work in this show is inspired by the Greek tragedy The Bacchae. All three exhibitions will be on view September 16–December 30, 2011. In addition, a nine-screen video installation by Diana Thater, depicting peony blooms, will be on view in the café during this time.
“All four artists address and/or incorporate aspects of the natural world into their work, if in very different ways,” notes Wexner Center Director Sherri Geldin. “Alexis Rockman and Paula Hayes are particularly invested in ‘eco-issues,’ producing work that reveals a keen sense of environmental consciousness. Elliott Hundley’s dense collages are ‘landscapes’ of a different order, laden with all manner of organic and found materials. And even the center’s lobby features a video installation by artist Diana Thater that puts peony blooms front and center.”
