One of the revelations of the recent Venice, Toronto, and Sundance Film Festivals, I Am Love is among the most commanding Italian films in many years. The tour de force movie tracks the dynamics of a wealthy family as the patriarch prepares to name his successor for the family business. The filmmaker's muse, Tilda Swinton, gives a striking performance as the heart of the family, the Russian-born wife of the patriarch's son.
I Am Love astonishingly integrates a stylish, ultramodern sensibility with a severe classicism that recalls Italian masters such as Antonioni and Visconti. Music by renowned minimalist composer John Adams, including excerpts from his operas, adds greatly to the film's symphonic sweep. (120 mins., 35mm)
