Compared with such documentaries as Tarnation and Capturing the Friedmans, October Country is a beautifully rendered portrait of the Mosher clan, an upstate New York family struggling for stability while haunted by the ghosts of the Vietnam War, teen pregnancy, and domestic abuse. Codirected by family member Donal Mosher, the film documents the struggles of the working-class family from one Halloween to the next as they try to break free from the issues that plague their family generation after generation.
