Phantoms of Nabua
(Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2008)
Mon, June 1–Tue, June 30, 2009
The Box
An ethereal portrait of the town of Nabua in northeast Thailand,
Phantoms of Nabua uses light, both natural and artificial, to explore place and memory. Shown here for the first time as a projected video installation, the work was originally commissioned as a web-based part of
Primitive, a “multiplatform” project by the artist that also includes installations, a publication, and an upcoming feature film. Weerasethakul, who has directed such acclaimed feature films as
Blissfully Yours (2002),
Tropical Malady (2004), and
Syndromes and a Century (2006), came to the Wexner Center in 2004 for a retrospective of his films. (10 mins., 36 secs., HD video)
Commissioned by Animate Projects, London, with Haus der Kunst, Munich, and FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), Liverpool.
