Classics

Many classic films are just as powerful today as when they were first released. We add such films from many genres to our schedule throughout the season. Many are shown on the occasion of their rereleases, in fresh, new or restored prints.

"MIRACULOUS...the night photography alone would make the film immortal."—New Yorker

"The restoration and long-delayed commercial release of 'The Exiles,' a 1961 film about a largely forgotten corner of that deceptively bright city, is nothing less than a welcome act of defiant remembrance..."—Manohla Dargis, New York Times

Based on interviews with the subjects and their friends, The Exiles chronicles one night in the lives of young Native Americans living in the Bunker Hill district of Los Angeles. A wonderful example of early American independent filmmaking, The Exiles premiered at that 1961 Venice Film Festival but never received a true commercial release. The current release in a restored 35mm print is the result of a joint effort by the USC Moving Image Archive, the UCLA Film & Television Archive, The National Film Preservation Foundation, and Milestone Films. (72 mins., 35mm)
