"The wildly giftedÖDesplechin yanks the rug from under his characters and sends both them and us reeling."—
New York Times
A highlight of last year's New York Film Festival,
Kings and Queen is a dazzling convergence of comedy and tragedy. The director introduces this screening to launch our retrospective series of his work.

Kings and Queen follows two stories until their harrowing intersection. One story focuses on Nora, a bourgeois woman who runs an art gallery, and the other on Ismael, a violinist involuntarily committed to a mental hospital. A looming tragedy in Nora's life finds her seeking out Ismael, at which point Desplechin's story takes some breathtaking turns causing viewers to rethink everything they've just seen. With Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Devos, Maurice Garrel, and Catherine Deneuve. (150 mins.)
