Arzner again battled studio censors over the treatment of premarital sex and pregnancy in Working Girls and Sarah and Son. Working Girls was cited by Ohio State professor and Arzner scholar Judith Mayne as "perhaps the most daring and innovative film Arzner ever made." It follows the exploits of two small-town Indiana sisters who travel to New York to seek their fortune. (1931; 80 mins.)

Actress Ruth Chatterton received a Best Actress nomination for her lead in Sarah and Son, where she plays a woman trying to reclaim the son taken from her in his infancy (1930; 86 mins.)
