Shrapnel in Peace Going By

Ali Shah-Hatami's Shrapnel in Peace and Iraj Karimi's Going By offer fascinating views of the Iranian landscape seldom seen from our shores.

Shrapnel in Peace focuses on two teenage boys scavenging in war ruins, and is among the few Iranian films to speak out against war--particularly against the Holy Defense, the Islamic government's designation for the devastating eight-year-long war with Iraq.(2001; 80 mins.)

Iraj Karimi wrote one of the first books on Kiarostami, and it's fitting that his feature debut, Going By, pays homage to the master. It depicts one day in the life of an assortment of characters, each driving separately from Tehran to the northern parts of Iran. (2001; 88 mins.)
