"One of the most purely enjoyable films ever made!...
One of the undeniably influential movies of the last century"
--Elvis Mitchell, New York Times
on Pépé le Moko Pepe le Moko features Jean Gabin in his breakout role as an ultrasuave but ultimately doomed thief taking refuge from the law in Algeria's Casbah. (Julien Duvivier, 1937; 95 mins.)
Polish director Andrzej Wajda's Ashes and Diamonds remains one of European postwar cinema's most thoughtful looks at the political culture of the Resistance during WWII. It's also notable for introducing the world to Zbigniew Cybulski, heralded internationally as "the Polish James Dean" (his untimely death being only one cause for the comparison). (1958; 96 mins.)
