Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes and an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Pelle the Conqueror is one of the most beloved art-house hits of the late 1980s. The gripping period drama stars screen legend Max von Sydow as a recent widower with a young son, Pelle, trying to escape their destitute life in 19th-century Sweden. The pair travels to a small Danish island in search of farm work only to be met with hardships and discrimination due to language barriers. (157 mins., DCP)
