Only Angels Have Wings

(Howard Hawks, 1939)

Considered by many to be Hawks’s best film, Only Angels Have Wings stars Cary Grant as the manager of a bare-bones air service that carries the mail from the fictional South American town of Barranca through a treacherous pass in the Andes Mountains. Things begin to heat up when entertainer Jean Arthur arrives in town and falls for Grant, followed by the arrival of ostracized pilot Richard Barthelmess and his mantrap wife Rita Hayworth in her first significant role. The film’s dazzling flying sequences, created with a combination of miniatures and actual stunt flying, have made it a favorite among aviation enthusiasts. (121 mins., 4K DCP)
