The New Black

The New Black examines the role of the African American community in the debate over the gay marriage movement. Focusing on the 2012 legal battle in Maryland—one of 17 states in the US to have legalized same-sex marriage—director Yoruba Richen delivers a nuanced exploration of the diverse range of attitudes from people on both sides of the debate and provides insight into this unique nexus of race, religion, and sexual identity. Richen, a 2012 Guggenheim Foundation Fellow, has also created the documentaries Promised Land (2009) and Take It from Me (2001). (75 mins., DCP)
