The Missing Picture

(Rithy Panh, 2013)

Nominated for the 2013 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, The Missing Picture sees filmmaker Rithy Panh (S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine) revisit his memories of the years when millions of Cambodians lost their lives under the rule of the Khmer Rouge and dictator Pol Pot. Since so many personal belongings were destroyed by the regime, there is little visual record of life during this time. Panh fills in this missing picture by reconstructing scenes from daily life (both good and bad) with clay animation—reenactment that sharply contrasts with the chilling “official” Khmer footage. The result is a powerful testament to human resilience and the restorative power of art. (92 mins., DCP)
