Melancholia
Exclusive Columbus engagement! Lars von Trier, 2011
Dec 2, 2011–Dec 15, 2011
“Something truly special. Gorgeous, profoundly emotional and often very funny. Von Trier’s made something tender and exquisite and metaphysical and vulnerable.”—Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com

“Stunning. A movie that leaves the viewer in a state of ecstacy. A moving masterpiece, marked by an astonishing profundity of vision.” –Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

Filmmaker Lars von Trier describes his latest film, Melancholia, as “a beautiful movie about the end of the world.” The title refers both to a planet due to collide with Earth and the crippling depression of new bride Justine (Kirsten Dunst, giving the performance of her career and deservedly receiving the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival). As the extinction of the planet draws closer, Justine is tended to by her sister Claire (an equally magnificent Charlotte Gainsbourg). The scenario may be science-fiction but the grand romantic emotions (including despair) that the film conjures are pure heart-felt human drama. Also starring Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling. (130 mins., digital presentation)
