Turkish artist Kutlug Ataman, featured in the Image Stream exhibition, first gained distinction as a feature filmmaker. Tonight's screening features his prize-winning film Lola and Billy the Kid and his rarely seen first feature, The Serpent's Tale. Ataman's Lola and Billy the Kid was a top prize winner at the International Istanbul Film Festival and audience favorite at numerous gay and lesbian film festivals worldwide. A German and Turkish coproduction, it's an involving drama about a Turkish teenager in Berlin whose growing awareness of his homosexuality sets him at odds with his family. (1998; 93 mins.)

Ataman's rarely seen first feature, The Serpent's Tale, screens afterwards. Part mystery and part intellectual thriller, the film was shot on location in Istanbul. (1994; 82 mins.)
