Goodbye, Dragon Inn

From Taiwan, Goodbye, Dragon Inn is set entirely in a cavernous, leaking, movie palace where, onscreen, King Hu's 1966 sword-fighting epic Dragon Inn unfolds. The real story is in the audience, comprised mostly of solitary characters—some gazing at the screen, others adrift in their own memories, wandering aimlessly, or searching for companionship. As the New York Times noted, the overall mood of the film is "both tartly comic and mournfully romantic.... Its simple, meticulously composed frames are full of mystery and feeling; it's an action movie that stands perfectly still." (82 mins.)
