Chimes at Midnight

(Orson Welles, 1965)

wex grid image fill

Orson Welles’s third Shakespeare adaptation for the screen, Chimes at Midnight pieces together extracts from numerous plays to capture the spirit of the Bard’s jovial, philosophical, and sometimes melancholy antihero Falstaff. Widely panned on its release, Chimes at Midnight is now considered by many to represent the great director at his best. It was his own favorite among his works. (119 mins., DCP)

Digital restoration undertaken in 2015 by Janus Films and the Criterion Collection, sourced from Filmoteca Española’s scan of the original 35mm negative.
