| About
the Work Jill Rowinski's project welcomes visitors to the Canzani Center Gallery with an artful arrangement of common welcome mats. (Coming through the gallery's entryway is like walking on a Carl Andre.) In an adjacent space, Rowinski has placed a stack of more than one hundred ruffled, pink and white checked gingham aprons. On occasion, she performs standing on a pedestal of welcome mats while assistants dress her with the aprons. She greets visitors with conventional hospitable clichés, sometimes accompanied by a tenor singing songs about home. Combining sculpture and installation, role-playing and human interaction, Rowinski constructs and critiques the welcoming behaviors of a well-versed hostess. |
