About the Work

Vehicles can become homes away from home, outfitted with climate control systems, refrigerators, and elaborate media centers designed to provide domestic comforts. Gregory Green's M.I.T.A.R.B.U., a restored Volkswagen Westfalia camper, is one such homey conveyance, although its domesticity conveys only half of its message. This artist is best known for his fascinating and realistic replicas of bombs and other dangerous objects, designed to provoke discussion about issues of individual empowerment, systems of authority, and the boundaries of art, activism, and social commentary. Continuing his explorations of the control and availability of technology, he has retrofitted the camper of M.I.T.A.R.B.U. to provide access to communication systems, which will be used during the exhibition by guest DJs and for pirate radio broadcasts.
