As the Wex's content manager, I was fortunate enough to get an early look at sample chapters from On Brazil and Global Cinema, the first substantial English translation of the work of late Brazilian film critic and archivist Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes, which was made possible with support from the Wexner Center's Via Brasil project. Though the essays included in the book come from another culture and another time (the 1950s through the late 1970s), Salles' approach to film writing and viewing is remarkably—and timelessly—relatable. The book will be released later this year, but in the meantime, you can learn more about Gomes in this first edition of WexCast, a new podcast series sharing in-depth discussions around the center's multidisciplinary programming. Hit play to hear from Maite Conde and Stephanie Dennison, co-editors of On Brazil and Global Cinema, as well as UCLA professor Randal Johnson and Brazilian critic-filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho (Neighboring Sounds, Aquarius). The talk is hosted by the Wex's Director of Film/Video, David Filipi.
